M57 Defender Conversion

M57 Defender Conversion

Build slots available

We engineer and fit the BMW M57 turbo-diesel into the Land Rover Defender — a complete, properly integrated conversion built for torque, range and reliability on and off road.

The M57 is BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six turbo-diesel — a torque-rich, long-legged engine that transforms how a Defender drives. Our conversion isn't a parts kit dropped in and hoped for the best; it's a fully engineered installation covering mounting, drivetrain mating, cooling, fuelling, electronics and emissions integration, finished and road-tested to a standard we'd put our own name on.

Each build is tailored to your Defender, your gearbox preference and how you use the vehicle, so the work below is a guide to what's involved rather than a fixed package.

What the conversion includes

Engine & ancillaries

A checked M57 unit fitted with turbo, injectors and ancillaries inspected and serviced as required.

Custom engine mounts

Bespoke mounting to locate the M57 correctly in the Defender chassis with the right clearances and serviceability.

Gearbox integration

Adaptation to your chosen manual or automatic transmission, including bellhousing, flywheel and clutch or torque converter spec.

Cooling & intake

Uprated radiator, intercooler and pipework sized for sustained load and hot-climate or expedition use.

Wiring & electronics

Standalone or integrated engine management, loom adaptation, dash signals and fault-free communication with the vehicle.

Fuel & exhaust

Fuel delivery, filtration and a custom exhaust system built to clear the chassis and breathe properly under boost.

The conversion process

  1. 1
    Step 1 of 7

    Consultation & spec

We review your Defender and goals, agree the gearbox route, cooling and electronics approach, then issue a tailored quote.

  2. 2
    Step 2 of 7

    Strip & assessment

The donor and recipient vehicle are stripped and inspected so any chassis, bulkhead or wiring issues are caught before fitting.

  3. 3
    Step 3 of 7

    Mounting & drivetrain

Custom mounts are fabricated, the M57 is positioned, and the gearbox and driveline are mated and aligned.

  4. 4
    Step 4 of 7

    Cooling, fuel & wiring

Cooling, intake, fuel and the full electrical integration are installed and routed for reliability and access.

  5. 5
    Step 5 of 7

    Commissioning

First start, leak-down checks, mapping where applicable, and full system verification on the ramp.

  6. 6
    Step 6 of 7

    Independent inspection & MOT

We use a trusted third party to put the vehicle through a full MOT and produce an independent engineering report on the conversion — giving you impartial verification of the workmanship and a record for your insurer and the authorities.

  7. 7
    Step 7 of 7

    Road test & handover

Real-world testing, final adjustments, and a handover covering running-in, servicing and what to expect.

Frequently asked

How much does an M57 Defender conversion cost?

Every build is quoted individually because the gearbox choice, condition of your Defender and how you'll use it all change the spec. Get in touch and we'll provide a tailored quote.

How long does the conversion take?

Lead time depends on current workshop schedule, parts availability and the spec of your build. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your quote.

Can you use my existing gearbox?

In many cases yes, with adaptation. For higher torque or heavy expedition use we'll often recommend a stronger transmission — we'll talk you through the options.

Do you supply the engine or can I provide one?

Both. We can source and check a suitable M57, or work with a unit you supply after inspection.

Is the conversion road-legal?

The conversion is engineered to be fully usable and serviceable. We arrange a full MOT and an independent engineering report through a trusted third party, giving you impartial verification of the work. After an engine change you'll typically need to notify your insurer and the relevant authorities — we'll advise on the paperwork involved.
