Defender Bulkhead Swaps

The bulkhead is the structural heart of a Defender — and after the chassis, it's the part most likely to be quietly rotting behind the trim. Defender Syndicate replaces corroded bulkheads at our Carnforth workshop, near Lancaster, fitting new and galvanised bulkheads to Defender 90, 110, and 130 for owners across Lancashire, the Lake District, and Cumbria. We'll inspect yours honestly, show you exactly what we find, and tell you straight whether it's a repair job or a replacement — and if it can wait, we'll say that too.

Why bulkheads fail

Defender bulkheads rot from the inside out — footwells, door pillars, vent panels, and the top corners under the windscreen go first, hidden behind trim until water appears in the footwell or the doors stop shutting cleanly. Because the bulkhead ties the chassis, doors, windscreen, and dash together, serious corrosion is an MOT and structural issue, not a cosmetic one.

Repair or replace — honest advice

Caught early, footwells and pillars can be repaired with quality panels and our specialist welding service. Past a certain point, a replacement bulkhead is the better job: we fit new and galvanised bulkheads that will outlast the rest of the vehicle. We'll inspect yours, show you exactly what we find, and recommend whichever route genuinely makes sense.

What a bulkhead swap involves

The dash, wiring, heater, pedal boxes, steering column, doors, and windscreen all come off or out, the old bulkhead comes away from the chassis outriggers, and the new unit goes in with new fixings, seals, and paint protection. It pairs naturally with a chassis swap — with the vehicle apart, doing both together saves significant labour and gives you an essentially rot-free Defender.

Parts and coverage

Bulkheads, panels, seals, and fixings come through our Britpart supply chain — genuine, OEM, or quality aftermarket. We serve Defender owners across the North West, from Lancaster and Morecambe through Kendal and Windermere to Penrith and Carlisle, with recovery to our Carnforth workshop available for vehicles that shouldn't be driven.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Defender bulkhead needs replacing?

Warning signs include damp or rusty footwells, bubbling around the vent panels, doors dropping or not latching cleanly, and visible rot in the door pillars. If you can see corrosion from outside, there's usually more behind the trim — bring it in and we'll assess it honestly.

Is a bulkhead swap an MOT issue?

It can be — the bulkhead is structural, so corrosion within 30cm of body mounting points or seatbelt anchorages can fail an MOT. A sound bulkhead removes that worry permanently.

Should I do the bulkhead and chassis at the same time?

If both need work, yes — the strip-down overlaps heavily, so combining a bulkhead swap with a galvanised chassis swap saves labour and delivers a structurally new vehicle in one project.

Do you use galvanised bulkheads?

Where available for your model, yes — galvanised is our recommendation for longevity. Otherwise we fit quality new bulkheads properly protected inside and out before assembly.
