Defender Chassis Swaps

A rotten chassis is the single biggest threat to a Defender's future — and the best investment you can make in one. Defender Syndicate carries out full chassis swaps at our Carnforth workshop, near Lancaster, fitting new galvanised chassis to Defender 90, 110, and 130 for owners across Lancashire, the Lake District, and Cumbria. Vehicles come to us from much further afield too, because few workshops do this work properly: a full strip-down, new fixings and lines throughout, and a rolling restoration that adds decades of life and real value to your Land Rover.

Why swap the chassis?

Every original Defender chassis rusts — it's only a question of how far it's gone. Once outriggers, crossmembers, and rails start failing MOTs year after year, patch welding becomes false economy. A new galvanised chassis resets the clock: it protects the vehicle's value, ends the annual welding bill, and gives a working or off-roading Defender decades more life. With classic Defender values where they are, a chassis swap almost always pays for itself.

What a chassis swap involves

We strip the vehicle — body, drivetrain, axles, wiring, and pipework — transfer everything to the new galvanised chassis, and replace the fasteners, bushes, brake lines, and fuel lines that should never go back on. It's the ideal time to deal with other jobs while access is easy: suspension upgrades, a replacement bulkhead, or one of our BMW M57 engine conversions. You get a rolling restoration, not just a repair.

Parts backed by Britpart

As a Britpart supplier we source galvanised chassis and every bolt, bush, and bracket the job needs from one of the world's largest Land Rover parts ranges — genuine, OEM, or quality aftermarket to suit your budget. Everything is agreed with you before the work starts.

Chassis swaps for the North West

Owners bring Defenders to us from Lancaster, Kendal, Windermere, Penrith, Carlisle, and across the Lake District — and further afield, because few workshops do this work properly. We can arrange recovery of non-runners to our Carnforth workshop. Not sure if you need a full swap yet? Our welding and chassis repair service can keep a borderline chassis legal while you plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Defender chassis swap take?

Typically several weeks depending on the vehicle's condition and what else is done while it's apart. We'll give you a realistic timescale and keep you updated with photos as the build progresses.

Is a galvanised chassis worth it over a repair?

If the chassis needs major welding in more than one area, almost always yes. Repairs on a corroded chassis are chasing rust; a galvanised replacement stops the problem permanently and adds real value to the vehicle.

Will a chassis swap affect my Defender's registration?

A like-for-like replacement chassis fitted as part of a repair is normally fine, but DVLA rules around chassis numbers must be followed correctly. We'll walk you through the paperwork side before any work starts.

Can you collect my Defender if it isn't roadworthy?

Yes — we regularly recover non-running Defenders to our Carnforth workshop from across Lancashire, the Lake District, and Cumbria. Tell us where it is and we'll arrange it.
